Nkwusm Family

NEWS! 2009 Graduate returns

Date: 12/1/14

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My full name is Shandiin Ma'iiDeeshghiizhinii Pete, although I go by Ma'ii for short. I am a former student here at Nkwusm as well as one of the four first graduates of Nkwusm. I am without words to describe my joy about returning to the school that has shaped who I am as a Salish women. It is a privilege to come back to my roots and begin giving back what Nkwusm has given me.

I love preschool because I care deeply about each of my students. I believe students can grow and develop by participation and having great role models to look up to. My main goal as the new teacher’s aide is to increase student’s security with the Salish language.

I will also be taking on the role as parent coordinator. My job as parent coordinator serves as the liaison between school and parents. I work closely with teachers and staff to strengthen partnership, develop trainings and parent activities to facilitate parent engagement. I will provide referrals to community-based services for families, develop community collaborations, and assist elder and classroom staff in organizing events.

Note that if you ever have any comments, questions or concerns, I am available for phone calls and meetings (by appointment please) each day between 1:30-3:00. To schedule a meeting, you may contact me via email maiipete@yahoo.com
I am excited about working with you and your child. I welcome your input and am looking forward to a great year!
